Dr. Sinelia Peixoto’s research focuses on language, literacy, and standard language ideologies among diverse youth, exploring how students self-assess their reading and writing.

Key areas of her work include:

Adolescent Literacy: Analyzing how diverse middle-school students evaluate their literacy practices during enrichment programs.

Cultural Awareness and Support: Promoting equity and inclusion in middle-school environments, such as through international and cultural awareness clubs.

Standard Language Ideologies: Investigating the "ghostly presence" of traditional language norms in student self-assessments.

Sinelia Peixoto is an award-winning ESOL teacher, author, and Doctor of Education known for founding the International and Equity Club at Georgetown Middle School in Delaware. 

 

Background and Education

  • Native of Brazil: Moved to the United States and became a passionate advocate for immigrant and diverse student populations.

  • Doctorate in Education: Earned her Ed.D. from Salisbury University, where she was also a Holmes Scholar. 

  • Finishing the Principal Preparatory Program at the University of Delaware.

 

Teaching and Community Work

  • Georgetown Middle School: Teaches English as a Second Other Language (ESOL/ELL) and English Language Arts in Delaware. 

  • International Club: Founded in 2024 to support the school's high Hispanic/Latino demographic, fostering cultural pride, community, and heritage celebrations. 

  • Grant Recipient: Received funding from The NEA Foundation and recognition alongside colleague Heather Langton for innovative teaching programs like "Write Your Story".
